Art Exhibitions
I believe it is imperative for 'emerging artists' or 'artists in training' to be given the opportunity of exhibiting their work as this develops their knowledge of not only producing their work but in exhibiting, marketing and selling it. Though community art exhibitions exist in communities urban and rural it is also important for art students to run and manage their own. Since my appointment of Chair of the RQAS Gold Coast in 1998 I have encouraged students to hold annual exhibitions and for 10 years 'Art and Soul' was held initially at RQAS then at The Robina Community Art Gallery.
When I joined Mental Health and Rehab Services-Gold Coast with Queensland Health in 2008 I became involved in successful Mental Health Week Art Exhibtions which coincided every year with International Mental Health Day 10th October and Mental health Week with exhibtions such as 'Be Mind Wise Art Exhibtion 2008' and 'Be Active, get connected, stay involved' in 2009 and now 2010 held at Soutport Library, Cnr Lawson and Garden Streets, Southport 8th-15th October. These exhibitions put a light on the creative spirit and talent that emerges in everyone even those with mental health issues in our community.
Student exhibtions afford each person an chance of involvement in exhibition proceedures namely;
The presentation of their work through framing, naming and pricing
The promotion, advertising and marketing of an exhibition and artwork
The hanging processes involved in an exhibtion
The social aspect of an exhibtion such as opening night
The daily management of an exhibition such as rosters, sales etc
The de-hanging of the exhibition
